    Description

I believe this may be a serving platter from the 'first' NYC Plaza Hotel, which existed for only 15 years before it was torn down and replaced with the current Plaza that we are all familiar with. Collectors, and those interested in NYC history would be well advised to at least consider this possibility if they should come across this pattern, as that would be pretty significant if true, at least from a historical perspective. I am not aware of anything surviving from this first hotel. I base this theory
on the Maddock China Lamberton back-mark as seen in my photos. Collectors will recognize that this mark is believed to date from the 1890's to about 1910, when a new mark was introduced. (That does also suggest a possible three year window for this pattern to have been used in the current Plaza Hotel, which opened in 1907). Either possibility is still interesting since most collectors are only familiar with the 'DOUBLE P' Plaza logo. The pattern on this piece suggests an old-fashioned asthetic more suited to the 1890's than even to the 1910's. This may have been considered too dated by the new Plaza, which was trying to foster an image of elegance. I would love to hear any theories or opinions from you good folks out there as I am no expert. I will publicly post any questions or comments on the auction page if requested.
